Overview
SmartConverter converts natural-language text ("10 km to miles", "3 ไร่ to square meters") into a numeric result. Most conversions are computed entirely on your device by a deterministic conversion engine, using no network connection at all.
When the on-device parser cannot understand a request — an unfamiliar language, an unrecognized or region-specific unit — the app asks an AI service to interpret the wording only. The AI never computes your result; a fixed, on-device calculation always does that. This policy explains exactly what leaves your device, to whom, and why.
Data on your device
Your conversion history and favorites are saved locally on your device using Android's standard app-private storage. SmartConverter has no user accounts, no login, and no server-side database of your conversions — this data never leaves your device unless you explicitly use the Share action below.
| Stored locally | Leaves device? | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Conversion history (up to 50 entries) | Never | Let you revisit past conversions |
| Favorited conversions | Never | Quick access to conversions you pin |
Tapping Share on a result hands that one line of text to the Android system share sheet, which is entirely under your control — SmartConverter does not see or log which app or contact you choose.
When AI assistance is used
If, and only if, the on-device parser cannot resolve your input, SmartConverter sends the text you typed — nothing else, no device identifiers, no history, no location — over an encrypted HTTPS connection to SmartConverter's own backend (a Cloudflare Worker), which asks a configured AI provider (currently Google's Gemini API) to identify the quantities, units, and target unit you meant. That structured answer (e.g. 10, kilometer → mile) is sent back and validated on your device before the on-device engine computes the final number.
If a unit genuinely depends on a region SmartConverter can't infer (for example, a "bigha", whose size varies by Indian state), the app will ask you to clarify rather than guess.
Third-party services
SmartConverter relies on three external services. Its own backend code never sees or stores a persistent copy of your conversion text beyond the single request needed to answer it.
| Service | Receives | Purpose | In transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Workers (SmartConverter's own backend) | Your typed text, only on AI fallback | Relays the request to the configured AI provider; applies validation and safety checks | TLS |
| AI provider (currently Google Gemini API) | Your typed text, only on AI fallback | Interprets language/units into structured data | TLS |
| Google AdMob | Advertising identifiers, device/app info | Shows banner ads that support free use of the app | TLS |
Google's own privacy terms govern data it processes for Gemini and AdMob: policies.google.com/privacy.
Advertising
SmartConverter shows a single, non-intrusive banner ad via Google AdMob to support free use of the app. AdMob may use the Android Advertising ID and device/app signals to select and measure ads, per Google's own advertising and privacy policies. SmartConverter does not build its own advertising profile of you, and does not show ads while an AI request is in progress or in a way that interrupts a conversion. If an ad fails to load — no network, no fill — the app continues to work normally; ads never block or affect conversion accuracy.
What we don't do
- No account creation, login, or personal profile of any kind.
- No server-side database storing your conversions or history.
- No sale of personal data, to anyone, ever.
- No location, contacts, camera, microphone, or storage permissions requested.
- No AI provider API key or Cloudflare credential is ever embedded in the app — both live only on the backend server as protected secrets.
Retention & deletion
History and favorites remain on your device until you delete them individually in-app, clear the app's storage, or uninstall SmartConverter — at which point they are gone, since no copy exists elsewhere. Text sent during AI fallback is used only to produce that one response; the backend does not persist a searchable log of user queries. Brief, temporary diagnostic logs (e.g. an error code and timestamp) may be visible to the developer through Cloudflare's real-time debugging tools when the AI service itself fails, purely to fix that failure — these are not a permanent record and are not linked to any user identity.
Security
All network traffic — to the backend and onward to the AI provider — is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS). The AI provider's API key is stored exclusively as an encrypted secret on the Cloudflare Worker and is never shipped inside the app, logged, or returned in any response.
Children's privacy
SmartConverter is a general-purpose unit-conversion utility, not directed at children, and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
